NEWS: Studie "Status of German Fashion 2024"

Fashion Council Germany

Berlin, November 28, 2024: The Fashion Council Germany (FCG) and eBay Germany will publish the comprehensive study "Status of German Fashion 2024" on November 28, 2024. In collaboration with the renowned research institute Oxford Economics, the study takes a detailed look at the German fashion industry. It examines its economic significance, key challenges and opportunities, and the impact of global trends such as sustainability and digitalization.

Following the initial publication of the study "Status of German Fashion 2021," this new report focuses particularly on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the fashion industry and its impact on sustainability and market structures. The study reveals that employment within the sector is estimated to have declined by 20% between 2019 and 2023 – equivalent to the loss of one in five jobs. The study is further enhanced by guest contributions from leading companies, which shed light on specific topics such as technology, the circular economy, and trade. Guest contributors include Carbon Trust, Certilogo, eBay, Mended, ReHub, and Retraced. The study is aimed at policymakers, businesses, and the general public and is intended to serve as a basis for further discussions and measures to ensure the future viability of the German fashion industry. The study is available for download now.

Scott Lipinski, CEO of the Fashion Council Germany, emphasizes: “ With the publication of the second edition of our study on the state of German fashion, we want to initiate change. The collaboration with eBay Germany and Oxford Economics provides us with valuable, up-to-date insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the fashion industry – especially at a time when we are still dealing with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and other societal events and crises, and digital transformation is in full swing. The study clearly shows us: It is time to set the course for a sustainable future.”

Mandy Krüger, Head of Fashion eBay Germany: “ A dynamic environment like the fashion industry is characterized by technological advances, changing consumer preferences, and global economic conditions. An adaptable and innovative approach is crucial for the long-term success of companies in the fashion sector.”

The study "Status of German Fashion 2024" provides a comprehensive analysis of the German fashion industry. The first chapter offers an overview of the study's content, followed by an examination of the industry's current state within a global context. The study also sheds light on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a lasting impact on consumer behavior. Further chapters analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the German fashion industry, as well as long-term challenges such as sustainability and digital innovation. Finally, the study offers concrete recommendations and a conclusion on how to ensure the industry's future viability.

To mark the publication of the study, the Fashion Council Germany and eBay are hosting a digital presentation on January 14, 2025, where the study and its findings will be presented and discussed. Industry experts and the interested public will have the opportunity to learn more about the analysis and recommendations and to participate in the discussion.
