Together with eBay Germany, we published the comprehensive study Status of German Fashion 2024 in November 2024. In collaboration with the renowned research institute Oxford Economics, a detailed look at the German fashion industry is taken. The study highlights their economic significance, key challenges and opportunities as well as the effects of global trends such as sustainability and digitalization.
After the first publication of the Status of German Fashion 2021 study, the new report is particularly dedicated to the consequences of the corona pandemic for the fashion industry and its influence on sustainability and market structures. The study shows that employment within the industry fell by an estimated 20% between 2019 and 2023 - which corresponds to a loss of one in five jobs. In addition, the study is supplemented by guest contributions from leading companies that highlight specific topics such as technology, circular economy and trade. Guest posting partners include Carbon Trust, Certilogo, eBay, Mended, ReHub and Retraced. The study is aimed at politics, business and a broad interested public and is intended to serve as a basis for further discussions and measures to prepare the German fashion industry for the future. The study is now available for download.
Scott Lipinski, CEO of the Fashion Council Germany emphasizes: “With the publication of the second edition of our study on the status of German fashion, we want to initiate change. The collaboration with eBay Germany and Oxford Economics provides us with valuable, up-to-date insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of the fashion industry - especially at a time when the effects of the corona pandemic and other social events and crises are still with us digital transformation is in full swing. The study shows us clearly: It is time to set the course for a sustainable future.”
Mandy Krüger, Head of Fashion eBay Germany: “A dynamic environment, like the fashion industry, is characterized by technological advances, changing consumer preferences and global economic conditions. An adaptable and innovative approach is crucial to the long-term success of companies in the fashion industry.”
The Status of German Fashion 2024 study enables a comprehensive analysis of the German fashion industry. The first chapter provides an overview of the content, followed by an examination of the current state of the industry in a global context. The study also sheds light on the consequences of the corona pandemic, which has permanently changed consumption. Further chapters analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks of the German fashion industry as well as long-term challenges such as sustainability and digital innovations. Finally, the study offers concrete recommendations for action and a conclusion to make the industry fit for the future.
