Berlin Fashion Week has undergone some fundamental changes since its debut in 2007. What do you consider the most significant transformation of the Berlin Fashion Week format to date?

For me, the most significant change to the format of Berlin Fashion Week is the increased value and recognition it now receives from the city of Berlin. In the past, attention was often focused on larger fashion weeks like those in New York, London, and Paris, overshadowing efforts to establish Berlin as a leading fashion center. This lack of support limited the event's reach and hindered the recognition of talented designers and institutions like Premium & Seek and the Fashion Council Germany.

Over time, however, perceptions have shifted, and awareness of the importance of promoting and supporting the local fashion scene has grown. Berlin Fashion Week has gained significance as the city has begun to appreciate and celebrate its own fashion industry. This changed attitude has provided designers, brands, and industry professionals with a larger platform to showcase their work and has contributed to the growth and development of the fashion industry in Berlin.

While the focus on sustainability and technology is noteworthy, the most significant change to Berlin Fashion Week for me is the increased value and recognition it receives from the city of Berlin. This shift has helped establish Berlin as a remarkable fashion capital and has created a stronger platform for local talent.

Since last season, Berlin Fashion Week has been undergoing a significant shift in focus: innovative formats, young designers, and sustainable concepts are now at the forefront. How do you assess this positive change for Berlin Fashion Week in an international comparison?

I believe this positive transformation of Berlin Fashion Week is an important and necessary step. When comparing it to other international fashion weeks like New York, London, Milan, Paris, and Copenhagen, it's crucial to recognize that each city offers its own unique experience. It's not just about style and aesthetics, but also about the overall atmosphere and mood.

In Copenhagen, for example, fashion is designed according to Scandinavian principles, characterized by openness and simplicity. Furthermore, the atmosphere of Copenhagen Fashion Week is less hectic, allowing for deeper connections with like-minded individuals one might have met in Paris or Milan. Berlin, on the other hand, offers something entirely different. It's a countercultural experience that transcends the traditional perception of fashion weeks. It provides the opportunity to immerse oneself in the city's authentic ecosystem and observe the existing communities that thrive outside of fashion week. It's fascinating to see how these communities interact with the week-long program of events and shows. Moreover, Berlin's fashion scene is closely intertwined with its nightlife, creating a unique dynamic.

Overall, this positive transformation of Berlin Fashion Week aligns with the city's identity and offers a fresh perspective for fashion enthusiasts. It showcases innovative formats, emerging designers, and sustainable concepts, thereby contributing to the development of Berlin's fashion landscape within an international context.

What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming Berlin Fashion Week?

There are so many interesting events, but if I had to choose one, I'd probably be looking forward to deadHYPE's Fashion Week opening party. It's become something of a tradition. We know how to throw a great party to celebrate the talent we have here in Berlin. The party takes place in a cool venue that always has a certain house party vibe. It's a chance to connect with people, whether you come with friends or on your own. And you know, getting in can be a bit of an adventure when everyone's trying to find their way in. But once you're inside, you're surrounded by a bunch of stylish people who want to have fun and dance. It's just one of those hyper-local moments that celebrates Berlin.
